Recent Movies

It's been a bad couple of weeks for movie watching. I didn't make it through many of them. Here goes.

American Dreamz - can't believe this movie had Hugh Grant and the director of American Pie and About a Boy and it sucked this bad. Interesting concept, very satirical and not funny at all. Any movie that tries to mix in American Idol, with the president (obvious bush and chenney immitations) as well as terrorists and still tries to be a comedy has to get some credit for effort I guess but pretty much it's the only hugh grant movie that I have seen that I wished I didn't.

The Lost City - movie about Cuba in the 50's 60's with Andy Garcia directing and starring and Bill Murray and Dustin Hoffman in cameos....pretty boring.

Dick - Satirical movie about Richard Nixon with Kirstin Duntz. Not sure why I rented it....it does have cameos by Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell...however it was too stupid to make it worth while.

Moscow on the Hudson - Great accent by Robin Williams as a Russian but boring.

Off Mice and Men - the lone good movie I have seen in weeks. Excellent performances by Gary Sinese and John Malkovich. Just like the book.

The Big White - straight to dvd release for the latest Robin Williams (his career is sinking) movie. Not bad though. It has Holly Hunter and Woody Harrelson as well. It's about a in debt man (williams) who fakes his missing brothers death (harrelson) to get the life insurance money. He does this after Harrelson is gone for 5 years and williams finds a corpse left by a mob hit. Lots of twists etc. Not too bad....funny part where he takes the body (this is in alaska) and throws it over a mountain and the next day is mad because no wild animal has eaten him....so he smothers him in bacon and lard and raw meat....disgusting yes but slightly funny.

The Office is must see

Even though I don't need it, I have a new show to watch on TV. I watched seasons 1 and 2 of The Office recently and it is excellent. Very well written and very very funny. The best sitcom to come on regular tv in some time and also the best "when are they going to get together" couple since Ross and Rachel.

Movies I have watched recently

Watched the following recently

My Girl Friday
Old movie with Cary Grant, not really all that great. Just thought it was ok.

It Happened One Night
Excellent movie with Clark Gable. Supposedly the first romantic comedy. Also first movie to win all five major academy awards. It was done by Frank Capera who also of course did It's a wonderful life etc etc. The thing I like about his movies as they had a serious statement and great dialogue when you consider the time they were released (late 30's early 40's).

Also watched most of the second season of The Office....excellent.

Chris Evans Eats Some "CHiPS"

Wilmer Valderrama has been cast for a while now as Ponch in the film version of classic TV series "CHiPS", so the question has been circling as to who'll be playing his partner Jon Baker. Now, a source in New York for Latino Review says "I came across a little celebration that was going on there in the form of Wilmer Valderrama and Chris Evans popping open some bubbly and announcing to the crowd that Chris Evans has signed on to play Jon Baker, Ponch's partner. Wilmer himself actually said "Meet Ponch's new partner." The guys were pretty fired up about the deal. I also heard it mentioned that filming should start in late November early Decemberish, some time around when Chris wraps Fantastic Four".If true, it'll be the first time I've wanted to be pulled over by a cop in years. Paul Kaplan and Mark Torgove have already been brought onboard to pen the script based on the popular late '70s and early '80s motorcycle cop drama, which followed the pursuits of California highway patrol officers.

Recent Movie reviews

Here's my most recent movies I have watched.

Billy Madison - OK really dumb movie, I admit it. Obviously not one of Adam Sandlers better movies....but it had it's really stupid moments where I chuckled. Personally I like the movies where Adam Sandler isn't trying so much to be a moron but actually is trying to act to a decent script (Click, Wedding Singer, Spanglish, Happy Gilmore) as opposed to his popular yet stupid roles (Big Daddy, Little Nicky, Waterboy). This one falls in that later category but again it was slightly amusing at times as were the other stupid movies.

Downfall - 1/2 way through it...and believe it or not I like it and it's got subtitles. It's about Hitler in his final days and is told through his secretary's perspective. If you've never read about Hitler he is quite disturbing and yet oddly fascinating in this one aspect, it is amazing that this obviously mentally ill person was leading his country for years and no one stopped him . This movie shows that side of him. It is apparent to all of his generals that is completely mad and yet they still follow him to the bitter end.

Down in the Valley - Not a very good movie. It starts out with a decent story and then get's really dumb. Edward Norton's character is pretty good but it falls short.

The Lake House - OK sappy chick movie with an ok idea or new spin but it has huge plot flaws....i guess the thought was that you (women) would be captivated by the love story and wouldn't notice that parts of the movie didn't make a whole lot of sense....plus having Keanu Reeves (woah) as the male lead doesn't add a whole lot of credibility as he's not known for his awesome acting techniques.

Open Season - Pretty funny movie....one of the more enjoyable kids movies I have been forced to see. Good to see Martin Lawrence is up to something other then another bad boys movie and freaking out on LA freeways.
